Labour knows that the most powerful resource for transforming children's life chances is great teaching. Evidence shows that improving teaching is the surest way to raise achievement - particularly for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. When we were in government all permanently employed teachers had to be qualified.
But in 2012 the Government scrapped this requirement and now, thanks to this retrograde step, over 400,000 pupils are now taught by unqualified teachers -- teachers who may have had no training in safeguarding, controlling a classroom or adapting learning to individual pupils' needs.
Labour will reverse David Cameron's damaging policy, putting school standards first. Our ambitions is for a world class teacher in every classroom. That begins by ensuring all teachers are qualified.
